EA clarifies “Battlefield 4″ comments

The walls may not have ears, but people standing nearby sure do, and everything you say can end up on someone else's social networking stream. If you're an average person, that's not such a drama. But, if you're Frank Gibeau, president of EA, sometimes it's a handy reminder to watch your words.

Yesterday, Gibeau quipped "There is going to be a Battlefield 4," and the internet went crazy at the apparent confirmation.

Now, we've heard statements like this before, and they've often come true, but even though this one seems like an inevitability, Gibeau himself was rather vague.

Today, there's been no retraction from the publisher, who instead offered a slight clarification:

Frank was speaking broadly about the Battlefield brand - a brand that EA is deeply passionate about and a fan community that EA is committed to.

...that means that, sure, there will be another Battlefield title, but it might be Bad Company, it might be another Heroes, it could even be Battlefield 1944, but it might not be a direct sequel to Battlefield 3.

At this stage, unlike other major FPS franchises, Battlefield has not developed an annual release schedule, and with hints at another new Medal of Honor comeback in the not-so-distant future, that still seems relatively unlikely.

However. Battlefield 3 has, according to Electronic Arts estimates, sold more than five million copies in its first week on shelves, so it wouldn't be unheard of for the company to capitalise on the game's obvious popularity.
