Australian Visceral Games studio officially closed

Sad news to kick off the week - the Australian branch of Visceral Games has indeed been closed, putting 21 game developers out of a job.

Parent company EA has not yet released a statement on the topic, but the Melbourne IGDA branch has broken the news via Twitter.

At time of writing, the offices based in the United States and Canada appear to be unaffected.

Visceral Games

No longer in Australia

Just like fellow Aussies recently affected by THQ's "right-sizing", the team at Visceral were apparently working on an unannounced project, and had been for the past three years.

Patrick Soderland, formerly of Battlefield developers DICE came in as Vice President of EA's Games label, and apparently decided the multi-platform title would "not be profitable", closing the studio and scrapping the project.

While there's been no official word on just what this unannounced project actually was, anonymous sources are suggesting that it was The Ripper, based on 19th century serial killer Jack.
