[E32011] Nintendo to reveal new HD console at E3?

We'd be remiss if we didn't mention the fact the internets is buzzing today with the rumour that Nintendo will be unveiling a new console at this year's E3 Expo in June.

Rumour-mongering at its finest.

Whether or not you believe it, the Magic 8-Ball that is the online rumour mill is on fire with a story that started over at GameInformer. The site references "multiple sources", who claim that the new hardware will see the light of day at the expo - if not before.

Of course, as with all rumours-that-are-not-quite-fact-yet, there are some conflicts in what we're hearing. Everybody seems to agree that the console (probably not titled the "Wii 2") will be capable of HD resolutions. Both big-name consoles on the market can also handle HD resolutions, in slightly differing ways, and nobody seems quite sure where the new Nintendo offering will fit. On one hand, it could fall short of the current benchmark, but on the other, it could be even better than what's already out there. (A third option is that it could be exactly the same, but we're not considering that one.)

Apparently, the new console is already being showed to various publishers, trying to get them on-board before the anticipated late-2012 launch. According to an anonymous source chatting to GI, this one is "not a gimmick like the Wii", which may be a good or a bad thing, depending on how you look at it.

According to GI, it's believed that Nintendo are "trying to embrace the western gamer" with the new console, and may use it to launch a new brand.

Today's post has lit up the internets, even going so far as to be retweeted by the official E3 Expo Twitter.

E3's media people know how to fuel the fire.

Of course though, the final word has to come from Nintendo itself, and it's an unsurprising one:

"Nintendo does not comment on rumors or speculation."
