Metacritic scraps individual developer scores

As quickly as it appeared, Metacritic's controversial individual developer rating system has been removed. The feature was launched earlier this week to a wave of complaints, as developers complained about the site's relevancy, methodology and even the legality of ranking developers based on game scores.

Backflip!

The system saw fabled developers like Shigeru Miyamoto - creator of Super Mario rated with 80/100, well behind Ken Levine, the brains behind BioShock, who received 89.

Now, Metacritic accepts that the site's database (compiled in conjunction with sister site GameFAQs) is incomplete, and may not be the best source data.

From the site's official blog:

"Although our credits database is growing it is a work in progress and is not nearly as comprehensive as it needs to be.

"Although our credits database (which is powered by our sister site GameFAQs) is growing, as our users' feedback has indicated, it is a work in progress and is not nearly as comprehensive as it needs to be to accurately provide a career score for these individuals.

"As such, we have removed that career score from the pages dedicated to creative individuals behind games on Metacritic."

Minerva's Den

Sure, it's pretty - but is it better than Mario?

From the sounds of things, Metacritic still believes that the individual developer ranking system is a feature worth developing, so we'll probably see it returning to the site some time in the future... once there are a few more entries in the database, anyway.
