Welcome to World of Warcraft: Population 12m

There are an awful lot of people who play World of Warcraft: more than 12 million of them, in fact. That's more than the population of Greece!

The announcement follows the recent release of Wrath of the Lich King in China, as the rest of the world gears up for the game's third expansion, Cataclysm (due in December).

Mike Morhaime, is pretty pleased with the revelation:

“The support and enthusiasm that gamers across the world continue to show for World of Warcraft reaffirms our belief that it offers one of the best entertainment values available today.

“We are as committed as ever to taking the game to new heights, and we look forward to demonstrating that with Cataclysm in December.”

World of Warcraft was originally launched back on November 23, 2004, to tie in with the 5th anniversary of the Warcraft franchise. It quickly became the most popular subscription-based MMORPG around the world, not to mention the best-selling PC game (of any genre) for both 2005 and 2006. It lost the crown in 2007, when the first expansion pack for the game - The Burning Crusade - was released. 2008 saw a similar result, with second expansion Wrath of the Lich King topping the annual charts - and the earlier two releases still in the top five best-selling PC games. In 2009, the trio of titles very nearly repeated their performance, claiming three of the top six spots for the year.

If you want to play WoW, the game's available in eight languages, and is played all over the world: from North America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand, to mainland China, Korea, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, the Philippines, Mexico, Chile and Argentina.

With BlizzCon 2010 looming, we're not surprised Blizzard are engaging in a little back-patting. Expect plenty more of that over October 22-23, when we'll be reporting directly from Anaheim!
