PS3 firmware upgrade squishes PSjailbreak

PSjailbreak

It was good while it lasted...

Somewhat predictably, a new PlayStation 3 firmware update – 3.42 – has stopped the PSjailbreak piracy hack from working, less than a month after it was launched.

Version 3.42 is a “minor” upgrade, and too-new to be featured on the official website. John Koller, Sony‘s Director of Hardware Marketing explains that it includes “additional security features” – and doesn’t mention anything about the high-profile crack.

…gamers have tested it though – and the days of a hacked PS3 were short and sweet – neither PSjailbreak and the homebrew version, PSgroove, seem to work since the upgrade.

This is the second round of efforts against the hack – Sony recently won an Australian lawsuit resulting in the removal of the PSjailbreak kit from online retail stores, as well as banning the sale or import of the device in the country – and are trying to do the same in the US.

Richard Leadbetter from Digital Foundry explains that the upgrade isn’t exactly voluntary:

“3.42 is the only way to access PSN, so in Sony’s world you have to upgrade. However, for now it looks like people who have the Jailbreak are sticking to 3.41 and using a proxy server bypass to remain online.

“Going forward, the hackers will be attempting to reverse engineer future firmwares and producing custom versions that keep the exploit working.”

…so – obviously – if you have a PS3 that is kept isolated from the internet, you’ll be fine, but how many people do you know who do that?
