Welcome to Player Attack!
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game, based on the movie which is based off the comics, has been on top of my radar since I saw the trailer. Within the first few seconds I noticed the work of Paul Robertson and his pixel art style. The music kicks in and I could only think of Anamanaguchi, the popular chip tune band from Bit.Trip Runner. It looked like it paid homage to old school beat ‘em up games that I grew up with and had Ubisoft locked in as a publisher. Wow it seemed like the greatest combination of people... but is it as good as the trailer made it out to be?
The answer is yes... and more!
On his quest to win Ramona's heart, Scott will team up with his friends Kim and Stills against Ramona's seven evil ex-boyfriends. You have the choice of the four main characters each with their own special moves and power ups. Most of them have fairly similar skill list and level unlocks are about the same. When playing alone this choice of character may be important, especially if you have been levelling up just one, but with more players we never had an issue with who gets who.
Starting to play the game you realise there are many more things to make this game great, progressive story, leveling system and local co-op. However you will find some small errors within most of these areas. For instance leveling is locked to different player profiles, there is no drop in and drop out during the game and sometimes we had a few issues with going back and forth in the menus. These things seem minor and compared to the experience of the game, they are small drops of water in a big sea.
This game is hard and I am talking about how hard games used to be back in the golden arcade days. With one player, you are all alone against the hordes of enemies and the insane and unique bosses. If you are playing co-op then at least your friends can resurrect you. However we found this is actually worse with two players, as the enemies target the person trying to save you! With three players it isn't too bad, and with four it works fine (with communication of course). More players mean more enemies so be prepare for some crazy fights which might make you start wondering where your character is. I could complain about how if all four die you have to wait ages to continue, or other little nitpicking things... but none of that seemed to matter when playing.
This game is fantastic. It has everything I have wanted in a game for years. Co-op play means our house can all enjoy and the levelling system means I can play away on my own for a couple of hours, if need be. It is a very simple game that is fun, addictive and, at times, quite challenging. There are those few small issues, which hopefully an update is planned to fix, but to get the best experience it really should be played with four people at all times. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game respectfully gives a nod to the games that I grew up with and yet it remains new, challenging and fun and is something I wouldn't have any other way.
