Fragged CS player takes real-world revenge

In November, 2009, a few young French men got together online for a friendly game of Counter-Strike. At least, it was friendly when they started the knives-only round... but then Julien Barreaux was fragged by his opponent Mikhael.

Counter-Strike: This is a knife

This is a knife.

Deciding that Mikhael should taste steel in the same way as the ingame character, Julien took seven months to plot his next move and track down his online enemy. Eventually, he packed a kitchen knife and travelled the few miles to Mikhael's house, stabbing him in the chest as he opened the door.

Mikhael survived (the blade missed his heart by less than an inch), and Julien was arrested within the hour.

Judge Alexiane Potel commented during sentencing:

“You are a menace to society. I am frankly terrified of the disproportionate reaction you could have if someone looked at you the wrong way in the street.”

Julien was given two years in jail for causing grievous bodily harm, as well as court-ordered anger management therapy and a stack of psychiatric tests. We're not sure if Mikhael will be playing CS any time soon, or whether he'll be going after any more frags.

I don't know what it is about Counter-Strike, but it does seem to bring out the angry, knife-wielding sorts...
